Dr. Soul Emam - Biography

Working on childrens oral hygieneDr Soul Emam is proud to announce the opening of her Pediatric Dental Specialty practice located at Smiles on Yonge; 8900 Yonge Street in Richmond Hill.

Dr. Soul Emam, a graduate of New York University (NYU) College of Dentistry, received her Doctor of Dental Surgery in 2009.
Her passion and commitment to children’s health care, and in particular pediatric dentistry, led her to have an active role in the pediatric clinic at NYU and at Bellevue Hospital.  She was accepted into the Honours Program for pediatric dentistry.
Dr. Soul was also accepted into a second Honours Program at Odyssey House (through NYU) - a social services agency with innovative programs assisting families dealing with substance use disorders, medical programs, and intellectual disabilities.  During her time at the Odyssey house, Dr. Soul provided dental care to patients ranging from infants to seniors.
She also participated in a number of outreach programs where she treated and cared for patients (mainly children) in communities with little or no access to health care, including the HealthCare International (HCI) program in Jamaica.  During her outreach, Dr. Soul also trained school educators in Jamaica to implement preventative measures for children’s dental health.
After graduating from NYU, Dr. Soul went on to complete her specialty training in pediatric dentistry at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York.  During her time there, she was also on staff at Jacobi Medical Center (Level 1 Trauma Center), North Central Bronx Hospital, and the Rose F. Kennedy University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities.
Dr. Soul has extensive experience in all aspects of pediatric dentistry including preventive and minimally invasive dentistry, treating patients with special needs, interceptive orthodontics, nitrous oxide (commonly known as laughing gas), oral sedation, and general anesthesia.  She is also an instructor at the University of Toronto, Children’s Clinic, Faculty of Dentistry.
Dr. Soul received her National Dental Board Certification in 2009.  She holds a Fellowship with the Royal College of Canada in Pediatric Dentistry and is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (ABPD), which is the highest honour bestowed by the ABPD.

Dr. Soul's practice is open to all children and young adults. She is a specialist in treating those with anxieties and special needs and has various methods available that allow her to provide dental treatment in a safe, happy and comfortable environment.

Pediatric Dentist are Pediatricians of Dentistry. A Pediatric Dentist has 2 to 3 years of specialty training after dental school. We provide oral health care for infants and children through adolescence, including those with special health needs.

We are concerned about your child’s total health care. Good oral health is an important part of oral health. Our goals are on prevention, early detection and treatment of dental deceases, and we keep current on the latest advances in dentistry for children.

Part of Dr. Soul's responsibility as a Pediatric Dental Specialist is to provide oral health education to promote preventative dentistry. She would be happy to provide a short, age-appropriate presentation on the importance of oral health to your group (classroom, daycare, mothers' group), at your convenience. Included would be a demonstration of oral hygiene instruction and a fun and happy sing-a-long.

This is a great introduction to the importance of oral health for the children and also helps to decrease dental anxieties.

Advantages of Professional Oral HealthCare

  • Parents can help improve their child’s oral health with routine visits.
  • Pediatric dentists can provide parents with valuable information about cavities, oral hygiene instructions and feeding habits to prevent the need for fillings.
  • The goal of early visits is to prevent cavities and identify children that may be at risk for decay.
  • Children should visit the dentist by the age of 1.
  • Check-up cycles are unique to each child’s risk for dental decay.
  • Check-ups should be at least every 6 months in order to prevent cavities and other dental problems.

Tips for Good Oral Hygiene

  • Brushing with toothpaste and flossing be parent help to dislodge food and decrease bacterial plaque levels.
  • Children at moderate to high risk under the age of 2 should only use a “smear” of fluoridated toothpaste.
  • Children age 2 to 5 should only use a ‘pea size” amount of fluoridated toothpaste.
